De Nederlandse Vereniging van Dierentuinen (opgericht in 1966) is de overkoepelende organisatie voor Nederlandse dierentuinen. De dierentuinen van de NVD werken nauw samen op het gebied van educatie, recreatie, natuurbescherming en onderzoek. Zo hebben de aangesloten dierentuinen richtlijnen en codes opgesteld voor een verantwoord beheer van de diercollecties. Ook kent de NVD een ethische commissie, deze commissie adviseert bij diertransacties tussen NVD en niet-NVD relaties op grond van dierenwelzijn en ethiek. Lidmaatschap van de NVD kan beschouwd worden als een kwaliteitskeurmerk voor een Nederlandse dierentuin.
